School Sports

Wow, what a day last Friday! There were people throwing stuff, jumping over things and running flat out. Of course that was a good thing as we were at the school sports. It was great to see everyone doing their personal best. Make sure you say a big thank you to Mr Humphrey for organising the day and to any parents who volunteered their time. Well done everyone. What were your memorable moments from the sports?

Leadership

The school leaders enjoyed a great day at Hisense Arena. We heard some great leaders talk about leadership. Here’s who they were and what they said:
John Brumby (Premier of Victoria) – Leaders need perseverance. Don’t stop, give up or quit until you have made a difference. Leadership is encouraging a team to do better.
Kirsty Murray (Author) – Leaders are readers. Leaders aren’t afraid to tell the truth (in the right situations).
Drew Ginn (Triple Olympic Gold Medallist, rowing) – Leadership is dong whatever you ar epassionate about to the best of your ability. Put something out there. Create interest, energy and excitement. Have fun with what you’re doing.
Mike Martin: Great Leadership = Influence + Responsibility. Use influence, not for yourself but for those aorund you.
Catriona Rowntree: Gave 10 hints, including choose carefully who you listen to, live in the moment and feel the fear and do it anyway.
Throughout the day we heard some inspirational quotes on leadership. Some were:
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Barack Obama.
What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Goethe.
In any situation, the best thing you can do is the right thing; the next best thing you can do is the wrong thing; the worst thing you can do is nothing. Theodore Roosevelt.
I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else. Winston Churchill.
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. Mark Twain.
Success is not to be measured by the position someone has reached in life, but the obstacles they have overcome while trying to succeed. Booker T Washington.

Tommy Crow Visit

This morning we were lucky enough to have a visit from aboriginal artist and musician Tommy Crow. Tommy entertained us with his didgeridoo playing and talked about the role the didgeridoo plays in aboriginal tribes. He brought in some weapons such as a boomerang used for hunting. Tommy also showed us some of his wonderful paintings. He paints ’sunset dreaming’ art works. Tommy also explained the history of aboriginal dot painting. Tommy’s paintings can be seen at his website:

What did you enjoy about Tommy’s visit?

Homework

Congratulations on a brilliant first homework task! There were many fantastic models made, excellent research undertaken and neat book work. Keep up the great work!

New Words!

Each day you learn new words. You might come across a new word in a book, hear it on TV or hear someone say it. I’d like us to share new words we learn. The words can be wacky, obscureĀ ones that no one uses much. Or the new words could be very long and complicated. Or they can simply be words you haven’t come across before, but are in fact quite common. Here’s one to get us started -

impinge – if something impinges on you, it effects your life in some way. For example – The goat headbutting my bed has impinged on the amount of sleep I get.

Achievements

Here’s a space for you to let us know of your special achievements. Although I’m sure everyone was very proud of you when you learnt to tie your laces and get dressed by yourself, on this space we’re only going to share recent achievements. I can’t wait to hear what everyone has achieved!
