Eureka Tower

View from Eureka Tower

View from Eureka Tower What an exciting day we had when we visited the Eureka Tower! My favourite part of the day was the Sky Deck. What a great view we had over Melbourne and its surrounds. We could also see and hear about components of sky scapers that we'd learnt about back at school. We could even see the other classes sitting at Federation Square when we were on the Sky Deck. What did you think of the day?

Wednesday Blog Group

Today you have a competition! By yourself, or in pairs (no more than 2 in a group), you must write a post for our blog (the posts are what I usually write – heading in green with a comment everyone can respond to). It is your choice what you post: it could be a link to a survey you make on http://www.surveymonkey.com/”>, a PowerPoint presentation (an example is the trillion dollar one already on the blog), a topic statement such as ‘Shrek 4 will be the best movie ever’, a link to a cool website, a trivia quesiton or something completely different!
You need to write out (on paper) exactly what you are going to post on the blog. This is because it is your first go posting and we don’t want any mistakes on the blog. When you have had more practise, you will be able to post directly onto the blog without writing it out first. After Mr Porter approves your draft he will make you a ‘administrator’ on the blog and you’ll be able to post your comment.
Now to the competition part. Next week we will see who’s post has had the most replies. Whoever has had the most be declared Master Blogger!

New Trivia

When my boat is anchored, five of the rungs on the ladder over its side are underwater. If the rungs are 30cm apart and each one is 3cm thick, how many rungs would be underwater four hours later, if the tide rises at 35cm per hour?

How big is a million?

Have you ever thought about how big a trillion dollars is? Have a look at this amazing PowerPoint presentation. What did you think of the presentation?

This term Cleo is taking off for a fun-filled trip to America. In this section you can leave messages for Cleo to read. If Cleo gets time she’ll write back and let us know how she’s going. Enjoy your trip Cleo!

Googlewhacks!

5/6P and K recently learnt about google searches. We learnt how important it is to type the correct words into the search engine and that words like ‘and’ aren’t important. We also found out that questions don’t make good searches! We discovered ways to make ‘googling’ easier, such as clicking on ‘Pages from Australia’ when appopriate.
Your challenge is to find me some ‘googlewhacks’. A googlewhack is a google search containing two words, but here’s the tricky part…it can only return one hit! In other words, you have to find the one unique website on the whole world wide web that has those two words on it.
The rules are:
1. Your search must have only 2 words (4-30 letters in each word).
2. Your two words must be identified as real words by google (underline din blue after you complete the search).
3. Your googlewhack website must not be a website that is only a dictionary, wordlist, encyclopaedia etc.
Good luck!

Trivia!

What is impossible to hold for half an hour but weighs virtually nothing?

There have been a few good guesses! I’ll give you a clue. Everyone can hold this but you can’t hold anyone else’s.

Welcome!

Welcome  back to school for 2010. I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic  year. What are you most looking forward for 2010?

Celebration Photo Round 2

I was very impressed with the great effort with the last photo. Congratulations! Read all the posts to find out about a very exciting horse race. Can you guess what celebration/remembrance this photo was taken at? Clue: the name includes an acronym.

Celebration 1

What celebration is it?

Congratulations Ellie for correctly identifying the Hamelin Bay stromatolites in the previous photo. Some scientists believe the rock like stromatolites turned carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen millions of years ago paving the way for creatures like us to evolve! Now for your next challenge. Can you identify what celebration this photo was taken at. I’ll give you a clue: it is a celebration that occurs in Italy.

Where In Australia?

Well done to those who correctly identified Geraldton from the last photo. It was a memorial to HMAS Sydney and the 645 sailors who lost their lives aboard it during a battle with the German ship HSK Kormoran during World War II. Each seagull on the memorial represents a lost sailor. For many years the location of the wreckage remained a mystery. You might have seen in the news the wreckage was discovered last year. Can you identify where this photo was taken? The first one to post a correct, detailed answer will receive $50 Banno bucks!

Good luck!

Palindromes

Palindromes are words or phrases that read the same forwards or backwards. Some examples are EYE, RACECAR or MADAM I’M ADAM. Here are a few other good ones:

Don’t nod
Never odd or even
Was it Eliot’s toilet I saw?
A Toyota! Race fast… safe car: a Toyota
Sums are not set as a test on Erasmus

Can you think of any other palindromes? They can be single words or phrases!

Jokes

You asked for it, so here it is. A joke section! When posting to the jokes section, remember the Grandma rule: if your grandma would be offended, DON’T PUT IT ON THE BLOG! In this section we won’t discriminate against people. Otherwise, enjoy the jokes section and make everyone laugh.

Add a Caption

Add a caption to the pictures below! Some of the funnier ones from class for the dog photo included:

DC Green Visit

Wow, what a fantastic visit we had from DC Green! He was very entertaining with his surfing tales and rapping skills. I especially liked the Australian Idol story. What did you think of the visit?

Where in Australia?

I’ve got a challenge for you! The first person to correctly identify the area of Australia where this photo was taken gets $50 for their money books. Your post must include: where the photo was taken, a description of what is in the photo, the reason and the object was built and a fact about the structure.

Holidays

I’m sure everyone is disappointed the holidays are only a few days away. I bet everyone is upset you have to miss out on coming to school for two whole weeks! what are you looking forward to over the holidays?

Sorry Day

On May 26th we cut out feet from yellow, blue, green, red and black paper for Sorry Day. We made 54 feet to match the 54 recommendations of the Bringing Them Home report about the stolen generation. We discussed what happened to the stolen generation and movies that detail some of the events, like Rabbit Proof Fence.

Make up a statement saying sorry for something you have done (not something you’ve really done, something made up). Make it as unbelievable and funny as you like. For example:

I’m sorry for letting 1000 ants loose in the classroom, honestly. I only brought them in for my mini-beast project and they looked so cramped in the jar. I thought with all the training I’ve given them they would return to the jar on my command. Or at least stayed still when I called ’sit’ so i could pick them up. Anyway, I’m sorry.
